Cricket Meets Commerce: Inside the Billion-Dollar IPL Ad Ecosystem
The Changing Face Of IPL Advertising
Few sporting events capture India’s imagination quite like the Indian Premier League (IPL). With cricket at its core and entertainment embedded in its DNA, the IPL has evolved into more than just a sporting spectacle—it’s a full-blown marketing phenomenon. Over the years, it has transformed the advertising landscape, blending the thrill of sport with strategic brand storytelling.
The evolution of IPL advertising has seen significant shifts, particularly post-pandemic. Anshu Yardi, Vice President of Business Partnerships & Communication at TAM, highlights a major change in advertising dynamics reflective of broader shifts in India’s media consumption. According to data from a TAM Sports report, the total ad volume on linear TV is still recovering to pre-COVID levels, showing a 24% drop in pure ad commercials. Dominating sectors on FCT like telecom, auto, and durables have given way to newer categories such as BFSI and F&B, with 9x and 28% ad volume growth, respectively. NFCT/digitally embedded ads showed a 39% drop in 2024 compared to 2019.
Three major trends have emerged since 2019: innovation in ad formats, particularly interactive and QR-driven formats; a shift from pure reach to ROI with increased use of performance marketing; and a surge in regional, multilingual customization through geo-targeted versions on connected TV and mobile platforms. While FMCG remains the most consistent advertiser over five years, fintech, fantasy gaming, and food delivery brands are making strong debuts, and auto and smartphone categories are staging a comeback after the 2023 chip shortage.
The IPL Effect On India’s Sports Economy
Sports in India have become serious business. According to GroupM’s ‘Sporting Nation’ report, the sports economy has grown 3.6 times in the past decade, driven by a steady 13% CAGR over 17 years. In 2024, sponsorship growth stabilized at 1% due to rights cycle resets by the IPL and ICC and fewer matches played by Team India. Yet, the overall market remained resilient, underlining the strong foundation of Indian sports.
Karthik Shankar, Head of Digital Investments at GroupM, notes that the IPL has evolved into a much larger ecosystem, extending across on-ground activations, television, and digital platforms. The digital medium, in particular, has been scaling rapidly from an advertising perspective, unlocking deeper capabilities and broader possibilities.
Mapping The Viewership
The explosive growth of IPL viewership—from 102 million in 2008 to 620 million in 2024—has fueled the sponsorship value from $10 million in 2008 to $60 million in 2024 and the broadcasting value from $0.28 billion in 2008 to $1.28 billion in 2024. Shankar highlights innovations that have deepened audience engagement, such as brand pages, video duets, auto-fill ads, fence ads, fan reactions, and vertical highlights.
According to Hansa Research’s ‘IPLomania’ Study, dual viewership is a growing trend, with 67% of fans watching matches on both linear TV and OTT. Viewership on HD TVs is now 50% higher than on standard TVs, and connected TV (CTV) viewership has surged 2.25x year-on-year.
Unmatched Reach & Recall
IPL’s ecosystem offers numerous touchpoints for brands. Fantasy sports app Dream11 leads brand recall at 81%, followed by My11Circle (63%) and Tata Neu (59%). Jersey sponsorships, boundary branding, and on-ground pads are among the most recalled brand placements. Notably, non-core IPL categories like food, fashion, and footwear are seeing strong uplifts, validating IPL’s expanding relevance.
Ceat stands as an excellent case study in sustained IPL engagement. Deepa Mathew, Chief Insights and Digital Marketing Officer, explains how marketers leverage the many benefits of IPL. Ceat’s iconic ‘strategic timeout break’ ensures the brand’s multi-platform visibility and heightened recall. Ceat’s focused strategy has delivered not just visibility, but strong ROI and engagement, condensed into just 150 seconds of IPL airtime.
A League Of Brand Possibilities
The IPL isn’t just a cricket league—it’s a celebration of brand ambition and creative disruption. As the league continues to grow in scale and sophistication, so will the opportunities for advertisers to innovate, connect, and convert. In a fragmented attention economy, the IPL remains one of the few events that glues the nation together, making it a golden ticket for marketers.
